Vehicle-based Wireless Networks

We can install an internet-enabled wireless network into your vehicle so that any Wi-Fi enabled laptop or PDA can access the internet.  

A vehicle based wireless network can let any Wi-Fi equipped laptop, PDA or mobile phone access the internet from within the vehicle while travelling. Multiple devices can connect to the network at the same time, allowing several laptops or PDAs to access the network’s internet connection simultaneously. Devices on the network can also communicate directly with each other, so that network tasks such as file and print sharing can be carried out.

High speed internet access will be available whenever the vehicle is within a 3G area (as most major cities and motorways are), but lower speed internet connectivity is still maintained outside 3G areas wherever there is a mobile phone signal.

We can supply the equipment with a connection to any of Vodafone's mobile data tariffs, so that the vehicle network has a fully active internet connection that’s ready to be used immediately. Please see our internet page for price plan information.

Fixed

The network is professionally installed into your vehicle, with all the equipment located out of sight and the network’s power supply hard wired to your vehicle’s electrical system. Perfect for situations where the network does not need to be regularly transferred to another vehicle and a professional look is needed, for example chauffeur driven car companies.

For no extra charge we can install a 3-way switch in a discrete location in the vehicle so that you can choose when the network turns on and off. The 3 choices are:

  • Powers on and off with vehicle ignition (recommended)
  • Permanently turned off
  • Permanently turned on

The price includes installation into your vehicle at our workshop in Bristol, but we also offer a mobile installation service for an extra mileage-based charge. Please contact us for details. 

External Antennas

For some vehicles, especially those with tinted windows, it may be necessary for us to install a discreet external antenna, mounted on the inside of the rear bumper, in order to ensure optimum reception.  The price for this depends on the vehicle - please contact us for details.

We ship the equipment to you with a cigarette lighter plug so that it can be used in any vehicle within seconds. We also supply an AC power supply so that the equipment can be used inside (e.g. in a hotel). Perfect for people who need a wireless network in multiple vehicles or locations, e.g. business travellers.

Postage and packaging adds £9.00 + VAT.
 

How it works

Connecting to the vehicle's network is just as easy as connecting to any other wireless network. The laptop owner simply uses Windows' built-in wireless networking utility to search for nearby networks, and then chooses the vehicle network from the list that appears. 

Connecting to the vehicle wi-fi network is easy

The network will initially be supplied with open access, allowing any Wi-Fi enabled device to connect to the network, but either WEP or WPA encryption methods can easily be activated so that a pass code is required before a device can connect.
