Skype & other VoIP services in your car
Skype is a Voice over IP (VoIP) service that lets you make telephone calls using an internet connection rather than a dedicated phone line. Combined with our Internet on the move feature Skype allows you to:
- Talk to other Skype users for free
- Talk cheaply to UK landlines and mobiles
- Make cheap international calls
Given that you won't have a landline available in your car, Skype offers a cost effective alternative to using your mobile when you are travelling. The latest call charges are available on the Skype website but at the time of writing calls to UK landlines cost 1.2 pence per minute, with mobile and international calls being similarly competitive. Calls to other Skype users are completely free, and creating a Skype account is quick, free and easy.
In order to use Skype with your car computer system you will need 3G internet connectivity with a price plan that includes VoIP usage. T-Mobile's Web 'n' Walk Max is one such price plan, and also gives a massive monthly download quota of 10 GB.
You will be able to talk using Skype completely hands-free, without having to wear a headset. The caller's voice will be played over the vehicle's sound system and a fixed microphone will record the driver's voice.
Further Information
Due to bandwidth requirements, you will only be able to make calls when you are in an area with 3G coverage. Most major cities and motorways are covered by 3G and coverage is expanding all the time.
At present, for safety reasons, this feature cannot be used by the driver while the vehicle is being driven.
Services by other VoIP providers, such as Vonage, or corporate VoIP systems can also be used.
